I went down to Zuccotti Park recently to check out the Occupy Wall Street protest and was overwhelmed by all the activity. There's the camp itself-- a long stretch of tarps and sleeping bags complete with its own library, sanitation station, and meditation circle-- and then there are the many, many colorful protesters. The various issues being challenged are perhaps too diverse to make the occupation as effective as it could be. However, it's refreshing to see some proper activism as opposed to the standard, smug reposting of articles from the Huffington Post, Fox News, or whatever other media outlet reaffirms one's opinion.

More! More on their thoughts? Do they feel they are being effective, being heard? Anyone make a specific impression on you? Were their people really meditating in such a crowded place? What was the atmosphere like?
ReplyDeleteOh gosh! The people there are definitely passionate about what they're doing and feel that this is the beginning of something big and revolutionary. It was just a very exciting atmosphere, and most of the protesters were very eager to talk, to have their picture taken, and to have the whole movement published online. No one was meditating while I was there, because there was a drum circle happening right next to it, haha.
