Windows and doors in the Balkan

Belgrade, Serbia
Split, Croatia

As I meandered to Istanbul, I was surprised to find how much I liked the stony grays of the Balkans and, in particular, the old communist structures. I like that a building designed entirely to avoid a style (minimal, functional, same) ends up looking dated and tied down to a particular time period. The area is a bit roughed up from some turbulent years, and the buildings have character and history, betraying the intent of their design.

Nis, Serbia
Belgrade, Serbia
Sarajevo, Bosnia

This last one, taken in Bulgaria, is more like many windows and doors, but I think it still sort of fits with the theme here.

Plovdiv, Bulgaria
